For those who cannot shed those last several pounds or who have resistant pockets of fat, liposuction provides the perfect solution. With modern techniques, there is far less downtime. Depending on the area treated, many people can return to sedentary jobs and light activities within a week.

Some Interesting Facts About Liposuction

Liposuction has become among the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in America, with over 350,000 procedures done in 2013. Although it has been around for over 30 years, liposuction was not previously used very often due to the potential volume of blood loss that was associated with early methods. Back then, the patients were advised to store their own blood several weeks prior to surgery just in case. During liposuction, their stored blood would be transfused back into them if necessary.

The development of a technique called tumescent liposuction in the l980s revolutionized the procedure by eliminating most of the blood loss while providing long-lasting body-slimming results. The word tumescent means ‘swollen’ and refers to the fact that in this method, the targeted area is infused with a special solution, making it swollen and firm. It is thus easier to remove the fat and sculpt the body faster and with less downtime.

Liposuction for Exercise-Resistant Areas

Modern liposuction methods are safe and, in the right hands, can produce beautiful, natural, and permanent results. There are many areas of the body that retain excess fat, no matter how much exercise is done. Fat deposits in the hips and inner thighs, the calves, neck, and upper arms are especially stubborn. Only liposuction will permanently remove the fat in these areas.

Modern Liposuction Methods

There are several forms of liposuction that have been developed in recent years.

  • Tumescent Liposuction
  • Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction (or Smart Lipo)
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction

In all of these methods, the fat is broken up and removed from the body with suction.

Tumescent Liposuction

This method continues to be the most popular and safest method used today. A large amount of a dilute solution containing lidocaine (an anesthetic) and epinephrine (an arterial vasoconstrictor) is injected into the fat and soft tissue under the skin through very small incisions.
The anesthetic makes it very comfortable for the patient and, in some cases, is all the anesthesia that is needed.  Gradual and deliberate movements by the surgeon are necessary in order to avoid lumps or irregularities.

Since lidocaine is a long-lasting anesthetic, most patients find recovery very comfortable with any pain well managed by oral medication. The blood loss now typically consists of a few tablespoons of blood due to the effect of the epinephrine, which makes this a very safe procedure when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Once the fluid is infused, and the anesthetic has taken effect, a thin tube called a cannula is gently inserted through the tiny incisions, which are made in strategic places.

Fat is then suctioned out with a precise technique to ensure a natural contour. Liposuction is one of the easiest operations to carry out but one of the most difficult to perform well.

Inexperienced and untrained surgeons can create real problems, dents, and severe contour deformities. Trust only a surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to perform your liposuction.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

With this method, a cannula powered by electricity or compressed air is inserted through small incisions. Thanks to its rapid vibrating motion, it can quickly and easily slim the targeted regions. This technology is especially beneficial when patients require a significant volume of fat removal. Power-assisted liposuction (or PAL) causes no thermal injury, which can be better for patients undergoing liposuction in conjunction with abdominoplasty or fat grafting.

Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

As the name implies, this method uses ultrasound waves to dissolve the fat so that it can be more easily removed. UAL is done by infusing the targeted area with a large volume of fluid  through small incisions, similar to the tumescent method. Thermal energy is created as the ultrasound melts the subcutaneous fat. For some patients, this thermal energy can also help to tighten the skin.

Laser-Assisted or Smart Lipo

This method may be used when treating areas such as the neck, chin, and jowls. Small incisions are used to insert the cannula, which emits laser energy to help melt the fat cells, making them easier to eradicate. A small amount of thermal energy is created, which can also help with skin tightening for certain patients.
