What is an Umbilical Hernia?

Although more common in women, an umbilical hernia can happen to anyone. The condition usually occurs as a result of significant weight gain or multiple pregnancies. Umbilical hernias develop when added pressure against the abdominal muscles begins to weaken the joint near your belly button. If the abdominal wall separates, the intestines can protrude between the muscles and result in the telltale “bulge” near the belly button.

What to Expect During Hernia Repair

Hernia repair surgery can be performed as an “open” procedure or laparoscopically. The appropriate technique for your unique situation will depend on the size and severity of your hernia. During the procedure, a surgical mesh is used to rejoin the muscle and act as a long-term solution to prevent the hernia from recurring. Dr. Lampert performs hernia repair on an outpatient basis so you can recover in the comfort of your own home.

This cutting-edge facility is Federally Certified by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), the same agency that licenses all of the best hospitals in Florida. What is Recovery Like After Hernia Repair?

Recovery will vary based on your specific surgery and the severity of your hernia, but you will likely need three to five days off of work during the initial stages. Medication will be prescribed to make you more comfortable. You will be able to walk and perform light activities in the days following your surgery, but you will need to wait approximately three weeks to resume exercise or other strenuous activities.

Why Should I Choose Dr. Lampert?

Dr. Lampert is a highly-trained surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This notoriously difficult certification is an honor for those who receive it. His years of training and dedication are evident in his meticulous yet natural approach to cosmetic procedures. You can trust that your hernia repair is in the hands of one of the best plastic surgeons Miami has to offer when you choose Lampert MD Plastic Surgery.

FAQ

What Results Can I Expect After Hernia Repair?

After your hernia repair with Dr. Lampert, you can expect:

  • A smaller, less noticeable belly button
  • Reduced “bulge” on your lower stomach
  • Stomach is proportional compared to your other features
  • Clothes fit better

You will feel more comfortable and confident with your smooth abdomen after your hernia repair. Even though the durable mesh will last for many years, we still recommend maintaining a healthy weight and not having more children after your procedure.

What Are the Dangers Associated with a Hernia?

Simply having a hernia is generally not harmful, though there is a risk that it could worsen over time. The biggest danger of a hernia is the risk of “incarceration,” where the intestines or other contents are squeezed or trapped. In severe cases, incarceration can restrict or block the intestine. See a doctor immediately if you experience pain, nausea, or vomiting.

What Are Other Types of Hernias?

Hernias generally occur in the same area, but can differ in their causes and symptoms. Aside from an umbilical hernia, you can also experience an abdominal hernia, incisional hernia, diastasis recti, or ventral hernia.

Can My Hernia be Repaired During a Tummy Tuck?

Absolutely! A hernia is one of the many post-pregnancy concerns for new moms. Hernia repair can be performed on its own, paired with a tummy tuck, or as part of your Mommy Makeover.
